6. Do we need fear in our lives?
Fear is often perceived negatively, but it’s a fundamental emotion. I call fear a primary survival mechanism. By triggering the “fight-or-flight” response, fear literally protects us from undesirable events. It prompts us to be cautious, increasing our ability to assess situations. To prepare and plan are the byproducts of fear. Fear is a key factor for recognizing our personal boundaries. It also plays a vital role in social regulation. It deters us from the actions that could lead to social ostracism or conflict. Though excessive or irrational fear can be detrimental, the ability to experience fear is essential for navigating the world and protecting ourselves from harm. It’s a natural and basic emotion that plays a decisive role in our survival and well-being.
